Chapter Ten
The papers!
Lindsay leapt from her chair in absolute horror, shoving her teacup and saucer onto the corner table with a clatter. Oh, no. No. No. No! She’d left the Parson Blue papers and her father’s ledgers with Jonathan. She’d been so distraught and later drugged by his kisses all thought of them had flown from her head. “This is a disaster.” She pressed the heel of her hand to her forehead.
From across the room Claire nailed her with a questioning and strangely condemning gaze. “I say, Lindsay, what’s the matter?”
“Nothing,” Lindsay answered quickly—too quickly. “Nothing at all. I just, uh, forgot something…upstairs.” She had to get back to Jonathan’s hideout before he handed those papers over to Mr. Carson. True, he said he’d wait, but Lindsay had little faith in the promises of desperate men and Jonathan was definitely desperate.
Claire quirked a dubious brow before returning to her needlepoint. “Your behavior has been most peculiar the last few days.”
“Just a lot on my mind,” Lindsay offered distractedly, already marching toward the door. “Lord Harold being shot and then Lady Crawford’s sponsorship is a lot to take in all at once.”
“It’s more than that,” Claire pressed without looking up. “I’m your sister, Lindsay. I know you better than you might think.”
“Not now, Claire.”
“I know you’ve been sneaking out at night.”
Lindsay froze at the door. Blood drained from her head and limbs as pure ice chilled her from the inside out. She whirled on her sister, white-knuckled fists clenched at her sides.
Claire smiled with mock sweetness, but seriousness pooled in her dark eyes. “Don’t even try to deny it. I’ve seen you dressed in mourning attire and a black veil. Mamma—”
“You haven’t told her have you?” Lindsay stormed back across the room. “So help me, Claire, if you utter a word of this to her I am not above smothering you in your sleep.”
Claire narrowed her eyes. “Don’t tempt me,” she snipped. “But, no. I haven’t told anyone.” Sobering, she set her needlework aside and stood. “Tell me what’s going on Lindsay? I’m worried about you.”
Lindsay pursed her lips, searching for an acceptable rejoinder. Of course there was none to be had, no suitable explanation, and she certainly couldn’t come right out and admit, I’m working for the War Office. Even if she confessed the truth, her sister would sooner believe her lying or mad. “Claire, I can’t tell you. At least not now, but it could save us.”
Claire’s expression turned stony. “You of all people should see that we’re beyond saving, Lindsay. Lady Crawford can parade you about as her prized puppy all she likes, but at the end of the day no one will have us. Thank our brother for dying a traitor,” she spat acidly.
“Stop. You speak ill of what you don’t know.” Lindsay grasped her sister’s hand, imploring. “You must trust me. At the very least promise me you won’t tell anyone.”
Claire nibbled her lower lip, indecision written all over her face. “I don’t like this, but I suppose I have no choice but to trust you.
